DePaul was started by parents who had an idea: what about a school that teaches the way our children learn? For almost 40 years, we've used research-based methods to effectively deliver lessons to neurodiverse students.
Dyslexia is a learning difference that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, directional confusion, and poor spelling and decoding abilities. As many as 1 in 5 people are born with dyslexia. Students with dyslexia are often quite bright, and are gifted artists, singers, or athletes. More about dyslexia
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often presents as difficulty sustaining attention, hyper-restlessness, and impulsive behavior, leading to poor performance in school. ADHD is often displayed in hyperactivity, while ADD is a slower-paced state of inattention.
Dysgraphia is a visual-motor integration problem that causes childlike, nearly illegible handwriting that is often slow, labored, and tedious.
Sensory Processing Disorders are characterized by receiving and responding to information in unusual ways. Symptoms include spatial confusion, lack of coordination, and difficulties with rapid-fire conversations or activities.
Communication issues arise from difficulties related to speech, language and auditory processing. They range from stuttering to getting tongue-tied to a complete inability to communicate verbally. Causes include hearing loss, TBI (traumatic brain injuries), fetal alcohol syndrome, or various developmental delays.
We address these learning differences at DePaul.
If you suspect your child has one or more learning differences, we encourage you to book a tour with us, and if possible, get a full psychoeducational evaluation*, which will benefit your child greatly. If you're seeking a psychoeducational evaluation in Northeast Florida, we recommend:
